He was born August 31, 1940, in Madurai, a city in the state of Tamil Nadu, in southern India. After graduation from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India, he completed his residency in radiation oncology at University College London Hospital in England. He worked to establish radiation oncology practices in continental Europe, and met his wife, Diana Jucas, while they were both working for a year in Austria.  He immigrated to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, California, where he practiced at Beverly Hills Medical Center and City of Hope Cancer Treatment Center, among others.  He moved with his family to El Dorado, Arkansas, in 1983, and began working at the South Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute (SARTI, now Artesian Cancer Center). He was the sole radiation oncologist in his practice until his retirement in 2013.

One of his proudest accomplishments was establishing KBSA, 90.9, which broadcasts Red River Radio, a National Public Radio member station that serves southern Arkansas.  He was also an avid aviator and could often be found working on his single-engine plane at El Dorado’s downtown airport.

He is survived by his wife Diana Jucas, M.D., of El Dorado; daughter Alison Vasan, M.D., of Durham, NC; son Ryan Vasan, M.D., and his wife Liesl Finn Vasan of Boston, MA; and two siblings in India. He is remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Vasan will be cremated under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home.  A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Red River Radio via www.RedRiverRadio.org, or LifeTouch Hospice, 2301 Champagnolle Road, El Dorado, AR 71730.
